Bone Marrow Aspiration

What is bone marrow aspiration?

The cells in your bone marrow have the unique ability to produce every type of cell in your blood, including white blood cells to fight infections, red blood cells to deliver nutrients and oxygen throughout your body, and platelets that aid in healing.

The cells in your bone marrow that produce blood cells are called stem cells, and they have the power to regenerate many different types of tissue throughout your body.*

A bone marrow aspiration is a procedure to obtain a sample of liquid bone marrow from a bone with a significant amount, like your hip bone. Dr. Robles can evaluate the bone marrow to make sure it performs its function effectively. He can also obtain stem cells from your bone marrow to use in your treatment.

What is the purpose of bone marrow aspiration?

Dr. Robles uses bone marrow aspiration for several purposes at New Pain Solutions. He might recommend the procedure to diagnose or evaluate the progression of:

  • Anemia
  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Myelofibrosis
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Infections (e.g. tuberculosis)

Dr. Robles might also use the procedure to harvest stem cells for treatment. Since stem cells can diversify into many types of cells, they can replace injured tissues all over your body. Dr. Robles often uses stem cell therapy to regenerate cartilage in patients with osteoarthritis.

Stem cell therapy is also an effective treatment for painful musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries, such as tendon degeneration. This treatment may help you avoid surgery and reduce or eliminate the need for narcotic pain medications. Most patients experience pain relief immediately after their first treatment, but the full regenerative process may take up to 12 weeks.

How does bone marrow aspiration work?

When you arrive at New Pain Solutions for a bone marrow aspiration procedure, Dr. Robles checks your temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. He then provides you with one or more intravenous (IV) medications to sedate you and prevent pain.

Dr. Robles accesses your bone marrow in either your hip or your sternum. He uses a hollow needle to go through your skin and into the bone to access the bone marrow within. He uses a syringe to draw out the bone marrow aspirate (BMA).

BMA is a fluid concentrate that Dr. Robles harvests from your bone marrow. While you’re under anesthesia or gentle sedation, he extracts millions of stem cells from your bone marrow. If you choose to undergo stem cell therapy, Dr. Robles injects the stem cells from your bone marrow into the site of pain or injury.
