Any gardener will tell you that reviving your garden with compost from your own yard and dinner table is the best way to make it thrive. Then, after you’ve regenerated your wilting vegetation, you must continue nurturing it so that it can one day nurture you.

In much the same way, regenerative medicine practitioners tap resources from your body and your planet to help heal your injury, regenerate damaged cells, and nurture all of you.

Unlike traditional medicine—which tends to mask symptoms with pharmaceuticals and manipulate tissue with surgery—regenerative medicine aims to heal the root causes behind those symptoms, then, after symptoms resolve, nurture the body to prevent further damage.

Surgery and pharmaceuticals are often fraught with side effects, short-term solutions, and even causes of new conditions. Why not give your body a chance to rebuild tissues and bones using its own resources? A regenerative medicine practitioner can help bolster your whole health, not just disrupt your symptoms.

And Dr. James Robles is one of the top regenerative practitioners in the country.

Although he is one of just a handful of doctors on the planet to attain 14 certifications at some of the world’s most progressive institutions, Dr. Robles is most proud of the hundreds of happy, pain-free patients he has treated.

Dr. Robles realizes that healing is both a science and an art. It requires constant observation, education, and passionate, hands-on honing of subtle techniques unique to each patient.

From centrifuge technicians to physical therapists to nutritionists, Dr. Robles has trained his integrative holistic health staff to practice his evidence-based methods in order to:

  • Rejuvenate by boosting your body's natural ability to heal itself
  • Replace damaged cells with healthy ones, from fat tissue or umbilical cord tissue
  • Regenerate function by delivering specific types of cells to damaged tissues or organs
  • Restore balance to your whole body and mind to prevent future damage

Regenerative injections may treat a wide variety of conditions, but the most promising relief has been reported from patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis and severe tendon injuries. Other commonly treated conditions include:

  • tendon injuries, ligament sprains or tears (MCL, LCL, ACL)
  • hip pain: SI joint dysfunction, bursitis
  • shoulder/back/spine: rotator cuff tendinitis, partial tears, labrum tear
  • elbow: tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow
  • arm/wrist/hand: tenosynovitis
  • ankle/foot: Achilles tendinitis, partial tears, ligament injury, sprains
  • bicep tendonitis
  • fibromyalgia
  • head and neck pain
  • hernias
  • ligament injuries
  • nonsurgical ligament and tendon reconstruction
  • temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain

We’ve all punctured our skin, watched it bleed, and then heal itself. That’s because our bodies host highly specialized cells have the ability to re- grow damaged tissue in all organs.

Regenerative injection therapy is a pain management technique that aims to repair traumatized fibrous connective tissue (injured ligaments or tendons) that causes chronic pain and lifestyle impediments.

Dr. Robles has been certified in and excels at: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM), and Alpha-2 Macroglobulin injection therapies.

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (more commonly referred to as A2M) is a cutting edge non-surgical therapy for osteoarthritis pain and inflammation resulting from decades of osteoarthritis research. It is our body’s own defense mechanism, but it too big and complex to enter the joint or disc space in large enough quantities. That’s why we inject additional concentrated A2M into your affected areas to restore balance and relieve pain.

A2M is a master protease inhibitor that already exists in your blood and acts as a powerful inhibitor of cartilage breakdown. It attaches to and removes the destructive proteins in your joint. This special molecule works by binding to the enzymes (proteases) that degrade the cartilage cells and tissue.

Dr. Robles utilizes the Catalyst™ patented, proprietary filtration process to concentrate the naturally occurring A2M molecule in your blood up to six times! This allows therapeutic injections to:

  • boost natural healing by reducing the additional deterioration of cartilage
  • support tissue growth with naturally occurring compounds from your own blood

The earlier your joint degeneration is discovered, the less invasive your treatment will be. Early treatments can postpone the need for more aggressive and costly joint reconstruction or replacement surgery, so early diagnostics are crucial.

Research has shown that an inflammatory cascade of proteins causes back and joint pain. A recently discovered, unique biomarker called Fibronectin-Aggrecan Complex (FAC) has been identified in the painful inflammation of spine discs and joints. A novel antibody diagnostic test called FAC is used to detect the presence of FAC from a fluid specimen taken from your back or joint location. Like most other laboratory tests, FAC must be ordered by your physician.

During APIC Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (A2M) treatment Dr. Robles will inject a highly concentrated plasma glycoprotein, known as A2M, to achieve pain relief. A sample of your blood will be placed into a centrifuge, which yields a small amount of highly concentrated A2M. This concentrate is then injected directly into your pain or injury site.

Gradually and subtly, A2M may neutralize the harmful enzymes and proteins that cause arthritis pain by binding with the substances in your joints that degrade your cartilage. This treatment may prevent future degeneration.

Your blood is mainly composed of a liquid called plasma, which contains microscopic components: red cells, white cells, and platelets. Platelets are crucial to the blood clotting process and contain many proteins called growth factors which play a vital role in healing injuries.

Platelet-rich plasma contains many more platelets than typically found in blood. Platelet concentration (and growth factors) can be up to ten times greater than that of typical blood samples, so it may promote soft tissue cell regeneration and control inflammation, reducing or eliminating pain.

To create PRP, Dr. Robles and his technicians will draw your blood and separate the platelets in a centrifuge. Using state-of-the-art ultrasound guidance for precision and accuracy, they will then inject your platelets directly into your damaged tissue.

No amount of book reading or lecture listening can train a hand to administer precise injections into the exact tissue that really needs them. Dr. Robles’ skilled and agile hands have over a decade of practice on hundreds of patients.

Growth factors are protein molecules found naturally in your body and released by the platelets in your blood. They serve as chemical messengers, communicating with cells to stimulate and regulate cell growth and repair, increase circulation, and prevent cell death.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) is an enhanced version of PRP (platelet rich plasma), which has been around since the early 2000’s. It is thought to promote your body’s natural healing abilities by utilizing your own blood platelets to release growth factors.

These growth factors are extracted through a separation process that removes almost all contaminants to create a pure platelet solution. PRFM takes this pure solution to the next level by forming a gel-like substance that protects and preserves platelets for injection and keeps:

  • inflammation to a minimum
  • patient comfort in mind
  • sustained growth factor release at the injection site
  • platelets localized and viable
  • growth factor release sustained longer

Your practitioner will perform a basic blood draw and, with the use of a centrifuge, start the separation process. Once the final PRFM solution is prepared, he or she will inject it into your injured area.

The number of treatments needed depends on each individual patient, the desired outcome, and your physician’s treatment plan.

There have been no known side effects reported to date. As with any injectable procedure, some patients may experience mild and temporary irritation, swelling, bruising, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the injection site.

For 20 years, Dr. Robles’ success stories have demonstrated the advantages of regenerative techniques over surgery or over-the-counter medications:

  • little adverse or rejection risk: virtually no risk of adverse reactions or your body rejecting your own blood
  • short recovery time: no long-term wound healing or hospital stays
  • less invasive than surgery: surgical procedures can be expensive, painful, and debilitating with long-term effects like further debilitation and blood clotting
  • cost: much lower than surgical procedures
  • less pain: less invasive with minimal degree of physical discomfort
  • accessibility: even those deemed less than ideal candidates for surgery may qualify

Most regenerative injection treatments take no longer than 30 minutes and are administered in an outpatient setting. You may or may not receive anesthesia, but most patients don’t.

While regenerative injection treatments require little to no immediate recovery time, it’s important to let your body rest and heal after treatment. You may experience pain or swelling near the injection area for up to two weeks after treatment. Pain can recur after two weeks, but this is rare.

Unlike painkillers or injections that mask pain temporarily, regenerative injection therapy is intended to relieve pain permanently. The number of required treatments varies.

Most patients feel better and are able to return to their regular routine within a few weeks. However, as with any procedure, recovery time varies.

It is vital to follow your provider’s instructions exactly. Getting plenty of rest and avoiding anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin is crucial to the treatment’s efficacy. If you have any questions, always ask your practitioner.

As with any medical procedure, regenerative injection therapy presents some level of risk and success rates vary. While uncommon, risks may include:

  • existing condition aggravation: may aggravate conditions such as cancer – research to determine affects is ongoing
  • infection: in rare cases, injections or other factors may cause infection

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, do not cover regenerative injection therapies.
