Erectile Dysfunction Continued

When you were a kid with a scraped knee your mom put a band-aid over your wound and told you not to touch it. That’s because your body has amazing regeneration abilities. But with age and stress the regenerative powers of tissues and organs (including the penis) may require a boost. Regenerative medicine professionals empower your body to rebuild its own damaged cells, tissues, and organs, then nurture the whole you.

Traditional medicine treats disease symptoms of ER with pharmaceuticals. Regenerative medicine focuses on healing its root causes, and minimizing further damage. Although they have their place in extreme cases, pharmaceuticals usually come with side effects. They are often short-term solutions that cause new health issues. Regenerative practitioners enable your body to rebuild tissues and revive penile function naturally.

Dr. James Robles is one of the world’s most respected regenerative medicine practitioners.

He is one of a select few specialists on the planet to attain 14 certifications at some of the world’s most progressive institutions—including certifications in PRP and progenitor cell therapy. Dr. Robles is most proud of the countless joyful, pain-free patients he’s had the pleasure of healing.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough to have sex. This common condition generally, but not exclusively, affects men 60 and over. Male sexual arousal is a complex process involving your brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. A problem with any of these systems may lead to ED.

If you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, you’re not alone. Up to 30 million American men experience ED, with incidence increasing with age. 22% of males in their 60s and 30% of males aged 70 and older experience ED at some point. One in four men seeking their first ED treatment is under the age of 40.

In many cases, ED is a temporary condition caused by excess stress, life challenges, emotional difficulty, or a number of other temporary factors. In other cases, when ED is caused by medical conditions such as nerve damage or insufficient blood flow to the penis, medications and treatments may only solve part of the problem.

Erectile dysfunction isn’t inevitable. ED may affect anyone at any time, for a wide variety of reasons. Exercising, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, eating a nutritious diet, and maintaining a healthy state of mind can all help prevent ED. However, there is no way to predict the onset or duration of ED or how it may affect you.

As you age, blood flow to the penis may diminish, reducing your ability to achieve an erection and enjoy sexual intercourse, hampering your self-confidence and relationships.

Underlying physical or emotional conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stress, depression, or anxiety can also stimulate or intensify ED. For instance, decreased blood flow to the penis combined with a minor physical injury or condition may slow sexual response, leading to performance anxiety. Other physical or emotional causes can also lead to erectile dysfunction.

Occasional ED should not cause you serious concern. Temporary stress, relationship difficulties, or other life challenges may interfere with your ability to maintain an erection. However, frequent or distressing ED may require professional attention.

While the causes of ED can be varied and complex, its symptoms are fairly straightforward:

  • difficulty achieving a firm erection
  • trouble maintaining an erection during sexual activity
  • decreased interest in sex
  • premature ejaculation
  • delayed ejaculation
  • anorgasmia: inability to orgasm after sufficient stimulation

First, Dr. Robles will listen. After noting your symptoms and medical history, paying special attention to your heart, lungs, breathing, and blood pressure, he will examine your testes and penis, and rectum to check your prostate health. He may also recommend blood or urine tests to rule out other conditions, check hormone levels, or gather other data. Dr. Robles may discuss your emotional state, as trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression can cause or contribute to ED.

In some cases, Dr. Robles may recommend a Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT) test. This portable, battery powered device attaches to your thigh and measures your nocturnal erections while you sleep. This data will help Dr. Robles determine your best course of treatment.

Dr. Robles knows that successful healing requires science backed by compassion and curiosity. Advanced Pain Relief Clinic practitioners are constantly observing case studies, reading clinical studies, and perfecting and customizing delicate techniques for each unique patient.

Centrifuge technicians, nutritionists, physical therapists, and many more dedicated staff members have been trained by Dr. Robles personally to apply his integrative holistic health expertise into his evidence-based methods to:

  • restore your physical and mental ability to achieve and maintain erections
  • regenerate performance by applying progenitor cells to penis tissue
  • rejuvenate erections by powering up your body's intrinsic healing abilities
  • replace damaged cells with healthy cells from umbilical cord blood

After examining and hearing your specific ED symptoms, Dr. Robles will suggest a custom treatment plan that may include: regenerative injections, Internal Penile Pump™, external device, or prescription medication. As with all medical procedures results will vary based on age, genetics, environmental factors and other health conditions.

For over 20 years, Dr. Robles’ successes have applied regenerative injections as an alternative to surgery and over-the-counter medications, providing patients these benefits:

  • outstanding success rate: scientifically backed results—one recent study showed reduced pain and advanced tissue healing and function in five of seven PRP patients
  • fast recovery times: no long hospital stays
  • availability: even patients not qualified for surgery can usually receive these treatments
  • potentially permanent: most patients report amazing ED improvements after treatment
  • virtually no risk: virtually no risk of adverse reactions or your body rejecting your blood
  • minimally invasive: surgical procedures can be expensive, painful, and debilitating with long-term effects like further debilitation and blood clotting
  • lower costs: significantly more affordable than surgical procedures
  • almost completely pain-free: less invasive with almost no physical discomfort

Have you ever accidentally cut yourself, then watched your skin regenerate as if by magic? That’s because our bodies contain special superpowered cells that can regrow damaged tissues, veins, and nerves in your organs—including your penis.P-Shot is an ED therapy created to repair damaged tissue and veins responsible for erectile dysfunction.

Dr. Robles is a certified expert in:

  • platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy
  • progenitor cell injection therapy
  • P-Shot (Priapus shot)

Each technique offers unique benefits. Your specific medical condition may require more than one approach to fully achieve your desired results. The Journal of Sexual Medicine published a study demonstrating benefits of and lack of side effects in PRP treatment for ED.

Platelet-rich plasma contains many more platelets than typically found in blood. Platelet concentration (and growth factors) can be up to ten times greater than that of typical blood samples, so it may promote soft tissue cell regeneration and control inflammation, increasing the size and strength of your erections.

To create PRP, Dr. Robles and his technicians will draw sample of your blood and separate it from the platelets (or growth factors) in a centrifuge. These growth factors are then condensed and placed into a syringe. Then, guided by state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging, Dr. Robles will inject the P-Shot into your corpus cavernosum, the area of your penis most specific to vascular function related to erection.

Reading literature or hearing lectures can only go so far. True mastery only comes with years of experience and caring devotion. Dr. Robles’ skilled and dexterous hands have injected countless patients during his decade of practice.

The injection process takes about 30 minutes, with virtually no required downtime. You should see results within 1-3 weeks, and the effects may last up to a year.

PRP contains many beneficial cells, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). Studies show that PRP’s powerful regenerative properties may improve nerve and vascular function.

The Priapus Shot (P-Shot) is a next-generation form of ED therapy using injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Your blood is mainly composed of a liquid called plasma containing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Vital for your blood’s clotting ability, platelets also contain many proteins called growth factors, which are crucial for healing injuries.

Benefits of the P-Shot include:

  • P-Shot Therapy
  • stronger erections: P-Shot increases blood flow to your penis
  • near immediate effects: no long-term waiting for results
  • stronger libido: a more satisfying sex life
  • ease of use: no pills to take or devices to manage
  • low risk of side effects: PRP is made from your own blood
  • simple in-office procedure: no hospital stays or long recovery times
  • possibility for penis size gains: a welcome added benefit
  • nearly painless: local anesthetic masks any associated pain

If you experience serious side effects, contact Dr. Robles immediately:

  • bruising, pain, or soreness at the blood drawing site
  • bruising or pain at the injection site

The Internal Penile Pump™ is a surgically implanted device filled with saline fluid. The device expands and contracts without losing elasticity, pumping water into the tubes and causing your penis to expand and become rigid. This may be a good option if you want more sexual spontaneity.

The Internal Penile Pump™ may offer these benefits:

  • larger flaccid penis size: the device gives your flaccid penis a fuller, more youthful appearance
  • no more premature ejaculation: the device maintains your erection for as long as you desire. Many men report second orgasms during intercourse
  • ease of use: the device is self-contained, requiring no pills, equipment, planning, or preparation prior to sexual activity improved mood and well-being: your ED condition no longer requires maintenance, so you’re free to have sex at will

Penile self-injection involves injecting a prescription drug called alprostadil into the shaft of your penis, expanding the blood vessels and promoting blood flow. This treatment causes an erection firm enough for sex in about 80% of cases. Another form involves placing an alprostadil tablet into your urethra, where it dissolves. This system is known as medicated urethral system for erection (MUSE).

While penile self-injection and suppository are not as popular as pills or the Internal Penile Pump™, they remain viable options if you cannot use other forms of ED treatment.

These treatments require preparation prior to sex and generally last long enough for one sexual encounter. You are also advised to limit your alprostadil to three times per week, with at least 24 hours between doses. These reasons tend to make penile self-injection and suppository less popular forms of ED treatment.

Penile self-injection presents these rare side effects:

  • penis curving during erection
  • pain or swelling in testicles
  • priapism (erection that remains long after ejaculation)

The suppository form of alprostadil (MUSE) may present these side effects:

  • bleeding from the urethra
  • urethra pain

Also known as a penis pump, the external vacuum pump may help you achieve and maintain erections by drawing blood into the penis via air suction. Comprised of a plastic tube, a manual or battery-operated pump, and a constricting ring, this device is placed over the penis shaft and pumped to engorge the penis with blood.

Its effects may potentially last up to 30 minutes. However, pumping too hard or too often could potentially damage your penis.

While this treatment does not cure erectile dysfunction, it may enhance your ability to have intercourse. The external vacuum pump is a noninvasive treatment option that can be used alone or with other treatments. It’s often considered supplemental, as it’s generally not as effective as other ED treatment options.

Potential benefits of the vacuum pump may include:

  • ease of use
  • minimal cost
  • noninvasive
  • lower risk of complications or side effects in contrast with other ED treatment options
  • can be combined with other ED treatments

Potential side effects or risks may include:

  • bleeding under your skin (petechiae)
  • penis damage
  • numbness
  • bruising
  • pain
  • difficult or painful ejaculation

Before starting any medical procedure or medication, consult your medical provider to learn about the details, benefits, and potential risks involved.

For patients who prefer the traditional route, Dr. Robles prescribes Cialis, Levitra, Viagra™, and Stendra. As the first FDA-approved oral medication for ED, Viagra™ is probably the most widely known ED treatment. Stendra (avanafil) is one of the newest ED drugs available. Studies have shown it might work faster than other ED medications.

These phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors block the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) to increase blood flow to the penis, resulting in an erection at an average success rate of 77% to 84%. As with all medical procedures results will vary, and side effects are common.

These medications share the following potential side effects:

headachefacial flushingnasal congestiondizzinessback painindigestionrunny nosediarrhea
Serious side effects of ED medications are rare, but may include:

vision losshearing losshypertensionfluupper respiratory infection
Another rare side effect of ED drugs is priapism, or a long-lasting involuntary erection. Priapism is a medical emergency that must be treated immediately, as it may cause long-term penis damage and other dangerous health effects.

You should not take ED medications if you take any form of nitrates. Alpha blockers may also interfere with ED medications. Tell Dr. Robles if you take these medications, or if you’ve ever experienced the following medical conditions:

  • heart attack
  • angina
  • irregular heartbeat
  • heart surgery stroke
  • low or high blood pressure
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • priapism
  • multiple myeloma
  • leukemia
  • sickle cell anemia
  • retinitis pigmentosa
  • bleeding problems
  • stomach ulcers
  • liver problems
  • vision loss
  • kidney problems

Discuss these options with Dr. Robles to learn whether they’re right for you.

Potential benefits of Cialis include:

  • works for up to 36 hours following initial dose
  • takes effect as quickly as 30 minutes
  • allows for sexual spontaneity
  • causes fewer side effects than Levitra, Viagra™, or Stendra

Potential benefits of Levitra (vardenafil) include:

  • works after 60 minutes of ingestion
  • can be taken with or without food

Potential benefits of Viagra™ (sildenafil) include:

  • effectiveness in two-thirds of patients, regardless of age or ED severity
  • potential side effects are mild and well-tolerated
  • younger patients may benefit from its effects as soon as 30 minutes after ingestion

Some potential benefits of Stendra are:

  • may take effect in as little as 15 minutes
  • food does not affect its efficacy
  • may last longer than other ED drugs (besides Cialis)

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, do not cover the P-Shot. However, they’ll most likely cover ED medications and may fully or partially cover other ED treatment options.
